Yesterday the world watched as women across the Globe stood for equality. The ‘Women’s March’ was so successful yesterday it cannot leave my mind. I’m so incredibly proud to be a part of this movement – despite not being physically involved in the marches, I’ve kept up to date with each and every aspect of every march.

The fact that it is still an issue so many of the population will need to suffer through – being led in America by a misogynistic and sexist new President - this march needed the much deserved attention it earned. Being a feminist is so widely mocked across the world – so I feel this march proves just how strong we women are. The need to be in control of our body is one we shouldn’t have to ask for – it is a right that should be simply ours without question.

I’m a feminist – I don’t think I’m ever going to deny that, but this movement has catapulted the need for feminism and highlighted just why it is so important. America almost gained its very first female President – and yet it hadn’t. Which means that currently American women have to try and convince people to stand for the much criticized Planned Parenthood – but this is a non-profit organisation who works to help give American women the much needed care they deserve. Planned Parenthood states it was “founded on the revolutionary idea that women should have the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfil their dreams – no ceilings, no limits”. Why then did so many have to fight over this right and the right for equal pay?

I’ve stated before why I think it’s so important to be a feminist, but I feel this is the occasion to reiterate it – being a feminist means equality for everyone. Not more rights for women – but the same, equal rights for both genders. There shouldn’t still need to be such a big movement – equality for all should have happened decades ago. Nicole Kidman recently stated she tells her young daughters they bear “leadership skills” rather than that they are “bossy” – there are such negative connotations surrounding women and the word “bossy” that children – young girls have to learn that being “bossy” will be used against them. This is why the world needs to change.

Although I was not able to take part in any of the marches, my social media has been flooded with images of celebrities and people I know being a part of the movement. It makes my heart swell with pride, that so many people feel as strongly as I do. That it was able to be done in a way without violence yet able to capture the eyes of the world’s media. That the movement might increase even more.

I am so proud. Because the future is female.
